Discrete spectral incoherent solitons in nonlinear media with noninstantaneous response

2011

International audience; We show theoretically that nonlinear optical media characterized by a finite response time may support the existence of discrete spectral incoherent solitons. The structure of the soliton consists of three incoherent spectral bands that propagate in frequency space toward the low-frequency components in a discrete fashion and with a constant velocity. Discrete spectral incoherent solitons do not exhibit a confinement in the space-time domain, but exclusively in the frequency domain. The kinetic theory describes in detail all the essential properties of discrete spectral incoherent solitons: A quantitative agreement has been obtained between simulations of the kinetic…

Global-Local model for guided wave scattering problems with application to defect characterization in built-up composite structures

2020

Abstract Predicting scattering of elastic guided waves in multi-layered solid plates with geometrical and/or material discontinuities is of great interest to many fields, including ultrasonic-based Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and health monitoring of critical structural components (SHM). The problem is complicated by the multimode and dispersive behaviour of the guided waves. This paper describes a unified Global-Local (GL) approach that is computationally efficient in cases that can be very complex in terms of geometry and/or material properties. One example of this is a composite built-up structure. The proposed GL procedure discretizes the “local” region with the scattering discontinui…

Modeling the impact of soft tissue on axial transmission measurements of ultrasonic guided waves in human radius

2008

Recent in vitro and simulation studies have shown that guided waves measured at low ultrasound frequencies (f=200 kHz) can characterize both material properties and geometry of the cortical bone wall. In particular, a method for an accurate cortical thickness estimation from ultrasound velocity data has been presented. The clinical application remains, however, a challenge as the impact of a layer of soft tissue on top of the bone is not yet well established, and this layer is expected to affect the dispersion and relative intensities of guided modes. The present study is focused on the theoretical modeling of the impact of an overlying soft tissue. A semianalytical method and finite-differ…

Advanced Ultrasonic Structural Monitoring of Waveguides

2008

Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGWs) are a useful tool in those structural health monitoring applications that can benefit from built-in transduction, moderately large inspection ranges and high sensitivity to small flaws. This paper describes two methods, based on linear and nonlinear acoustics for structural damage detection based on UGWs. The linear method combine the advantages of UGW inspection with the outcomes of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) that is used for extracting defect-sensitive features that can be combined to perform a multivariate diagnosis of damage. In particular, the DWT is exploited to generate a set of relevant wavelet coefficients to construct a uni-dimensional or m…

An unsupervised Learning Algorithm for Fatigue Crack Detection in Waveguides

2009

Ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) are a useful tool in structural health monitoring (SHM) applications that can benefit from built-in transduction, moderately large inspection ranges, and high sensitivity to small flaws. This paper describes an SHM method based on UGWs and outlier analysis devoted to the detection and quantification of fatigue cracks in structural waveguides. The method combines the advantages of UGWs with the outcomes of the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to extract defect-sensitive features aimed at performing a multivariate diagnosis of damage. In particular, the DWT is exploited to generate a set of relevant wavelet coefficients to construct a uni-dimensional or multi-di…

Outlier analysis and principal component analysis to detect fatigue cracks in waveguides

2009

Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGWs) are a useful tool in structural health monitoring (SHM) applications that can benefit from built-in transduction, moderately large inspection ranges and high sensitivity to small flaws. This paper describes a SHM method based on UGWs, discrete wavelet transform (DWT), outlier analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) able to detect and quantify the onset and propagation of fatigue cracks in structural waveguides. The method combines the advantages of guided wave signals processed through the DWT with the outcomes of selecting defectsensitive features to perform a multivariate diagnosis of damage. The framework presented in this paper is applied to the de…

Digital signal processing for rail monitoring by means of ultrasonic guided waves

2007

Recent train accidents have reaffirmed the need for developing rail defect detection systems that are more effective than those used today. One of the recent developments in rail inspection is the use of ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) and non-contact probing techniques to target transverse-type defects. Besides the obvious advantages of non-contact probing, that include robustness and a potential for large inspection speed, such a system can theoretically detect transverse defects under horizontal shelling or head checks. This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of digital signal processing to enhance the damage detection sensitivity of the non-contact system. The method proposed here comb…

3D simulations and experiments of guided wave propagation in adhesively bonded multi-layered structures

2010

Understanding guided wave propagation in multi-layered plates and interaction with discontinuities can be difficult, as well as the interpretation of the ultrasonic signals. Propagation of guided waves can be studied analytically solving the equations of motion with the proper boundary conditions; nevertheless analytical models can be difficult to solve for complex multi-layered structures or having inner discontinuities. The problem can be efficiently studied using numerical techniques. Simulation of guided wave propagation in multi-layered structures, for ultrasonic waves in the MHz range, is solved here with the finite element analysis based on an explicit integration rule to solve the e…
